Start the year with a clearer support picture

Teacher and pupils sharing a learning activity

Begin with what helps the pupil

A new school year brings new routines, relationships and questions. For pupils receiving additional support, a useful handover is more than a list of previous interventions. It helps the next teacher understand the person, the approaches that have helped and the things that still need attention.

Start with a short, practical picture. What does the pupil enjoy? What helps them feel ready to learn? Which adjustments are useful in the classroom? Keep the wording specific enough that another member of staff can act on it.

Separate current information from history

A record can be accurate about the past and still be unhelpful as a description of today. Check whether plans, contacts and staff responsibilities are current. Keep earlier evidence available, but make the present position clear.

Where something is unknown, say so. A missing review or an unconfirmed arrangement should become a follow-up task, rather than an assumption carried into the next term.

Give each next step an owner

“Keep an eye on reading” is difficult to hand over. A more useful action identifies who will do what, when they will do it and how the team will know it happened. That might be a baseline activity, a conversation with the pupil or a review of an existing strategy.

  • Agree the next practical action.
  • Name the responsible member of staff.
  • Choose a realistic date for checking back.
  • Record what evidence will inform the review.

Keep the first review manageable

The first weeks of term are busy. Choose a small number of things to revisit rather than trying to measure everything at once. A short review of classroom experience can reveal whether the plan is practical, whether support has started and whether staff need more information.

Include the pupil’s perspective where appropriate. Their experience can add context that a checklist alone would miss.

Make useful information easy to find

Staff should be able to find relevant pupil context without searching across disconnected notes. At the same time, sensitive information needs the right access restrictions. Follow your school’s agreed procedures for sharing and recording.
